Form 6 / Grade 12
On completion of the IGCSE or CSEC Examinations students may then enter Nations School of Sixth Form Studies. Seventeen subjects are offered at A-Level including Science and Business subjects, Sociology, Law and Psychology. Students may opt to remain in the School of Sixth Form Studies for either one year (AS Level) or two years (A Level). In some cases, A-Level certification can be achieved in one year.
The dynamic Service Project all Sixth Formers undertake is linked to the 100 Million Healthier Lives programme run by the Institute of Health Care Improvement in Boston whereby students work in groups to address health issues. The AICE Diploma programme was introduced last year and emphasizes the value of a broad and balanced study and permits successful students’ credits in 45 institutions of higher learning in the USA.
In addition to rigorous studies, the School has a service component whereby the students work one hour per week on a service project in the school or the wider community. Debates, Entrepreneur Day, Math and Science Challenge Day and a number of Inter-House sporting competitions and clubs ensure a varied educational experience for students.
An integral part of the 6th Form is the promotion of service projects on the part of the students. The purpose of the service programme is to empower the students to take responsibility for their own moral growth, to serve others in society and to care for the environment. The acquisition and development of moral qualities and character is of prime importance in education and is afforded a prominent place in our curriculum. Moral Education should not be viewed as an ‘additional subject’, but as a means by which our students can develop through their interactions with one another.
Nations School of Sixth Form Studies is the International Centre in Guyana for Cambridge Assessment International Education. A Levels are the leading educational assessment around the world and provide learners with a passport to success in education, university and employment. Students studying at Nations Sixth Form College can choose from a selection of 16 different A Level courses.
A Level syllabuses are divided into two parts; The AS Syllabus, which is covered in the first year of 6th Form, and AL which is covered in the second year. The system however allows for considerable flexibility e.g. it is possible to do both the AS and AL in one year in some subjects such as Psychology, Sociology and Business.
Our dynamic and well-qualified staff members have many years of teaching experience particularly with the A-Level syllabi and guide and nurture students to their full potential. Nations School of Sixth Form Studies is one of the largest Sixth Form providers in Guyana, welcoming students from top secondary schools throughout the country. It is the school of choice for many.
The Sixth Form building is air-conditioned, well equipped and has ample space. The students are provided with computer facilities. Computer Labs, a Science Lab, Common Room, Gymnasium and a Student Services Department contributes to overall success.
Nations School of Sixth Form Studies offers a number of scholarships to students of high ability who may be in need of such assistance. Successful candidates would then be expected to maintain a certain grade point average each term to maintain the scholarship.
